Students in seventh and eighth grade from five local school districts recently visited the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College though the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program.
Museum Education Manager Marjorie Hurley and the museum docents from Hamilton College guided students through the current exhibition, “Storytelling: Photographers Making Meaning | Works from the Wellin Museum.”
“Workshop participants were engaged in activities that helped them discuss art and improve their interpreting skills,” Herkimer BOCES Honors Program Coordinator Deborah Schoff said. “Docents guided conversations that encouraged participants to be more involved while viewing photos. These conversations helped students connect photographs in a series with their captions.”
Students from Central Valley, Dolgeville, Little Falls, Mount Markham and Poland participated in the Herkimer BOCES Honors Program event on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Wellin Museum.
After the tour, students created their own three-dimensional dioramas to show how meaning can change when two or more images are combined.
“It was a perfect activity that allowed students to further explore and incorporate thoughts and ideas from the day,” Schoff said.
