English Language Arts in sixth grade consists of many exciting and educational reading and writing skills. Your child will find that many of our assignments are cross-curricular.
Students will be using three different textbooks in our classroom. These texts are the Daybook of Critical Reading and Writing, New York State ELA Review, and Hidden Treasures.
The daybook is intended to improve students’ reading and writing skills. Students will be asked to read literature, “mark up” the text and write about what they have just read. The New York State ELA
Review book contains helpful chapters, examples, and practice tests for learning strategies to prepare students for the New York State ELA exam in January. The Hidden Treasures text contains excerpts from Nobel-prize winning novels. Students will be learning various reading strategies with these stories that will also help them in taking the ELA exam. We will also be reading a variety of novels in class throughout the year.
Sixth grade students are also asked to do many different types of writing assessments. Some of these assessments include poetry analysis, persuasive writing, and process
writing. Students will fill out graphic organizers, write rough drafts, edit, revise, and write final copies of all
writing assignments. Students will work on sentence and paragraph structure as well as grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
As you can see, we do a variety of things to help students improve their reading and writing skills. It is up to each and every sixth grade student to keep up with the work and
not fall behind!
