English Language Arts in sixth grade consists of many exciting and educational reading and
writing skills as well as the integration of different technology programs. Also, students will maintain a Portfolio where they will keep and assess their own work.
Students will be exposed to a variety of reading materials. We will be using the Hidden Treasures text
book which contains a variety of excerpts from Nobel-prize winning novels. We will use these excerpts, as well as short stories from other reading sources, to learn the various reading strategies that will
help with the ELA exam. Students will also read a the novel Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and will have a choice of a WWII novel at the end of the year – A Boy at War, A Boy No More, Heroes Don’t Run, Number
the Stars, Daniel’s Story, The Devil’s Arithmetic, Snow Treasure, Someone Named Eva, Hidden Child of the Holocaust, The Boy Who Dared or The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Sixth grade students are also asked to do a variety of writing assignments. Some
of these include poetry writing, persuasive writing, and process writing. Students will also write their own story and do a biography research project using a variety of resources and will learn how to cite
each resource in their biography. For each of these writing assignments, students will fill out graphic organizers, write rough drafts, edit, revise, and write final copies. Students will also work on
sentence and paragraph structure as well as grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Sixth grade ELA also consists of the use of technology. Students will use Power
Point, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Photostory, and will be entering comments into a blog, as well as other programs deemed necessary and appropriate to facilitate learning.
There will also be three (3) book reports. This will entail reading a novel and
doing a project for that novel. Each of the projects will be orally presented in class.
As you can see, we do a variety of things to help students improve their
skills. It is up to each and every 6th grade student to keep up with the work and not fall behind!
