All students in grades K-6 participate in the Effective Communicator Writing Program. The
program prepares students to write effectively across the curriculum in a variety of types of writing. Each year, students are assessed on four types of writing, which vary by grade level. Every ten
weeks of school, the teacher models a type of writing for the students. Then, students participate in several “practices” with the writing type. Finally, students are assessed. Assessments are
scored on a 1-4 rubric. A score of “4” means your child has mastered the concept/task. A “3” means your child is “proficient” in the concept/task. A “2” means your child has
“basic” understanding of the concept/task, but is not yet proficient. A “1” indicates that your child has little understanding of the concept/task. Assessments are collected in a writing
folder and scores are recorded on the writing folder. The writing folder is passed with the student from year to year so that your child’s writing progress may be monitored.
